Measuring a bolt pattern yourself

On a five-lug hub, measure from the centre of one stud to the outer edge of the stud two positions away. On a four-, six- or eight-lug hub, measure straight across from the centre of one stud to the centre of the stud directly opposite. Even-lug patterns are the easy ones; five-lug needs the offset trick because no two studs are directly across from each other.

Compare your measurement against the common truck patterns — 5x139.7, 6x120, 6x135 and 6x139.7 are all within a few millimetres of each other in places, so a sloppy measurement can point you at the wrong wheel. If the number lands between two known patterns, measure again.

Common questions

What does 6x139.7 mean?

The first number is how many lug studs the hub has. The second is the diameter in millimetres of the circle those studs sit on, measured centre to centre across the hub. 6x139.7mm is the same pattern as 6x5.5 inches — manufacturers and wheel makers use both units for the same thing.

Will wheels with the right bolt pattern always fit?

No. Bolt pattern gets the wheel onto the studs, but center bore and offset decide whether it sits correctly and clears the brakes and suspension. A wheel with a larger center bore than your hub can be adapted with hub-centric rings; a smaller bore will not go on at all. Offset that is too low pushes the tire outward into the fender.

Can I use an adapter to change bolt pattern?

Adapters exist and are legal in most states, but they move the wheel outward by their own thickness, which increases the load on the wheel bearing and changes the scrub radius. On a truck used for towing or hauling, matching the factory pattern is the better answer.
